Who we are

Long before we were a rugby club, we were a dream. A story joked about within our community, a "what if" uttered with hope, carried on the wings of those who dared to be seen in all their colours. Like the birds in Mary Albert’s tale, we too were once gathered in the dust of fields, uncertain, searching, waiting for someone brave, staunch and loving enough to put wind into flight.

And when those first few voices rose, the flock formed. We are the First Nations Lorikeets Rugby Club, born from the oldest living culture on Earth, shining beacons of pride, belonging, and resistance. Our colours are not only for sport, they are a declaration: that the intersection of living within the LGBTIQA+ community and being First Nations have always existed here on unceded and sovereign lands, side by side, long before the game of rugby we formed.

On and off the field, we play for those who never saw themselves in the game.

We play for our aunties and uncles, our brothers and sisters, our brother-boys and sister-gals.

We play for the joy of being alive, visible, and unapologetically ourselves.

In 2026, we will stand in Meanjin(Brisbane) at the Bingham Cup, carrying with us the spirit of our Countries and communities.

Each pass, each tackle, each try, a reminder that we are still here, still rising, still fighting and ready to Win!

Because when we come together, like the birds who found their colours, we remind the world:

There is power in diversity, beauty in difference, and healing in being seen.

Origin Story

The Lorikeets were born from a longing for a space where First Nations and LGBTIQA+ identities could coexist not as separate identities, but as wholeness.

We were a few voices at first, players, artists, advocates, lovers of the game; gathering virtually on seperate countries, navigating the complexities of this dream and hope of a team that could carry both our culture and our LGBTIQA+ community with pride.

From those early yarns came something bigger: a vision of a National Rugby Club that would not just play, but represent.

A club that honours and celebrates the duality of our identity. That acknowledges our community in every colour we exist in.

We called ourselves the Lorikeets, after the bird that dances between blossoms; bright, vocal, and fearless.

The Lorikeet reminds us that every shade belongs, and that community is made stronger by colour, not conformity.

We built this club from courage, connection, and shared stories, and as we take flight towards Bingham Cup 2026, we carry that story with pride.
